Dragon Warrior’s Forgotten Prophet

The manual of the original Dragon Quest / Warrior mentions a great prophet, called Mutsuheta (ムツヘタ) in Japanese and Mahetta in English. However, they never actually appeared in the game, or any other game, for that matter….at least, until Dragon Quest Builders in 2016.

Dragon Quest Builders is a “what if” sequel to the very first Dragon Quest game, which shows a world where the hero accepted the Dragonlord’s offer to rule the world alongside him. Obviously, this worked out badly for pretty much everyone, except for the bad guys, so the world is in a state of destruction and disarray. Each of Dragon Quest Builders‘ four chapters focuses on one of the cities in the original Dragon Quest, as you help its citizens rebuild them.

In the final chapter, you must rebuild Tantegel, the very first area. Among one of the NPCs is Mutsuheta himself!

Or, at least he’s called Mutsuheta in the Japanese version. The English version changes his name to Myrlund, which loses the connection to the original game.

The English writing for Dragon Quest Builders is otherwise fantastic, and it’s understandable that the localizers missed this fairly obscure reference.
