Midway's Psi Ops featured your traditional military dude on the cover. The Japanese version has the same military dude, plus the supporting cast members, all rendered by former SNK artist Shinkiro. The man's been working for Capcom for awhile now (see his artwork for Dino Stalker, Final Fight One, and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts), who published this game in Japan. They also spell out "Psychic Operations" in katakana beneath the English logo.

I never liked the American Prince of Persia: Sands of Time cover. The Prince's design reeked too much of those Dreamworks cartoons nobody likes, and his stern grimace really doesn't look too appealing either. So, Ubisoft replaced the 3D rendering with some rather nice artwork of the Prince and Farah. Even though it's not an "action" shot, it's far more pleasing. Oddly enough, the Japanese artwork for the sequel is exactly the same as the Western one.

Sudeki gets beaten up alot for trying to be too Japanese - British developer Climax obviously had an extreme fondness for SNES-era JRPGs when they designed this game - so it makes sense that they'd replace the original computer renderings with anime-style artwork for the Japanese version. Both are surprisingly pretty decent.

As much as I love Deus Ex, the picture of the dorky jock cyborg holding that gun gangsta style was kinda lame (as was that "Future War on Terror" slogan.) The Japanese version has a far trippier cover, with a digital man in a fetal position. Much cooler. It probably still didn't sell at all over there. Heck, it didn't even really sell over here either.

The American covers of Crimson Skies was painted by Drew Struzan, who gained fame for his movie posters for the likes of Star Wars and Indiana Jones. The Japanese version downplays the human drama and refocuses on the action. Except the artwork is almost exactly the same as the PC only predecessor, which I guess was never released over there, so no one noticed.

Pretty much every Tom Clancy game that isn't Splinter Cell just features generi-soldiers stalking and holding guns and looking sternly. The Japanese version of Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm is just some artwork of some soldiers chilling. Not exactly riveting, but at least it's different, and a little more eye-catching.

I find it strange that Sega published Killzone in Japan rather than Sony. Anyway, the helmeted soldiers straight from Jin Roh still makes its appearance on the cover, but it features pictures of some of the characters in action poses. It's also a little brighter.

The Japanese cover of Halo still features Master Chief, but ditches the lush green landscape and replaces it with... not a whole lot. Also notice how the "Combat Evolved" subtitle is ditched. Weird.

I can't believe the Backyard Wrestling phenomenon made it over to Japan. The Japanese version replaces the two guys flying at each other with a pair of tits. Good move, I say. The sequel did much the same thing.
