This is the arcade intro that's more or less identical to the arcade version. As you can see, it displays the dates of the previous game (Gradius and Salamander) and recalls important events from them, then the title screen comes up. Neat, huh?
Now, here is the specialty intro for the PC Engine Duo version. It just shows the Vic Viper launching off, while detailed its weapon systems, all set to rock music that sounds more like Lords of Thunder than anything Gradius-like. Still quite cool though.
Speed Up Without at least one of these, the Vic Viper is REALLY slow and sluggish. Two can be useful in most situations, but any more than that and you'll go out of control. |
Missile The typical Gradius style missile, a small little projectile flies downward at a 45 degree angle and travels along the ground until it hits something. |
Spread Bomb A tiny little ball will come flinging out of the front of the ship at an arc, then explode in a huge blue ball. It can be hard to aim, but causes tons of damage, especially to bosses. |
Photon Torpedo Not as cool as the name sounds, as torpedos are dropped straight down as opposed to going forward an any angle. |
2 Way Just like the regular missile, but two missiles are shot, going both upward and downward. This here is my favorite choice, probably because it's the most versatile. |
Double Not a horribly useful weapon...one bullet is shot forward while another shoots upward at a 45 degree angle. The amount of shots you can fire at one time is limited. Good if you don't have a 2 Way Missile, but only at certain points. |
Tailgun Again, since your firepower is limited, this really isn't too useful...it just shoots a regular bullet in front and in back of you. At least it's good when fighting the enemies with the spider robot near the end of the game. |
Laser Just one straight beam of light that fires forward. Simple, but strong and very effective. Never goes out of style. |
Ripple Not as powerful as the regular laser, but covers a wide area. While the firing rate is still a bit slow, it can be devastating with four options. |
Option Sometimes called "multiples", these orange things "shadow" the movement of your ship and fire along with it. You can have four of these things, which means major firepower. |
Shield The original shield from Gradius is back. It can take plenty of hits, but only protects the front of the ship. |
Force Field Ah, my favorite shield. While it can only absorb three hits, it surrounds your entire ship. However, you're still not invulernable to everything, so always been on your guard! |
