Game Index - Introduction

Retail: All Korean-developed games that were sold in stores are listed here, including plagiarisms and remakes but no ports. The release date is for Korea, except for games that were only released in other countries. Korean title may be replaced with the Japanese title in those cases. Does not include online games that were also sold in retail. Otherwise the list aims to encompass everything from every year, so reporting of any missing titles that don't belong in the other lists is welcome.

Conversions: This includes all originally foreign games (mostly Japanese) that were converted or ported to other systems in Korea. Limited to games that are brought to another hardware standard, software-only conversions like from DOS/V to regular DOS are omitted. Rip-offs and licensed remakes can be found in the regular list.

Arcade: List for coin-operated games. Strictly mechanical machines are omitted. There is no care for complete coverage of so-called redemption or gambling games (although some have snuck into the list). In the many cases where no actual release date is known, either the date of filing with the Game Rating Board or the in-game copyright date will be given. Some titles here are hacks of older games; consult Arcade History for details.

Freeware: Free-to-download homebrew and games that used to be part of TV broadcasts. Completion is only desired for games made public before the year 2000.

Yet to come:

Online: Games played online. Limited to games that were marketed as a standalone product (to avoid the thousands of simple browser-integrated games on online portals). Completion is only desired for games that got into open beta state before the year 2005. Will be posted together with part 3 of the history.

Unreleased: Games that were never finished or at least never published Games. Completion is only desired for games announced before 2005. Will be posted sometime.

Probably never to come:

Mobile: In 2004, a Korean news source estimated the number of companies that were producing mobile games to 400. Probably tens of thousands of mobile games have been programmed in Korea, and no one person can possibly catalog them all.
