The first Summon Night begins in the real world of "Nippon" (ha ha). You can select one of four main characters, all high school students with fears of an uncertain future. All of a sudden, they hear a voice begging for help, and all of a sudden, they find themselves transported to the alternate dimension of Rinbaum. From there, they're rescued by a group known as the Flat Gang, who take them in and discover their role in this strange world.
Characters
The original Summon Night is a bit on the unbalanced side - it's way too easy to focus on leveling a single character and having them steamroll over everything. It's also a bit slow to start, at least compared to the other games, which give you summon abilities pretty early in the game. Being unable to save before a fight is also infuriating, which means you'll have to sit through the same long cutscenes if you need to retry a battle.

It has been one year since the brutal war. Summon Night 2 tells the story of a new summoner who is seeking to finish their training. There are only two heroes from choose from this time (as with all succeeding games), and the characters are all residents of Lyndbaum, rather than hailing from the "real world".
Characters
Nesty
The male partner. Has mostly battle magic. Also voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa for those into that sorta thing.
In addition to each of your characters getting assigned a human partner, you get to choose a summon companion to join you at the beginning of the game. Other than this, some slight changes regarding class promotions and summoning abilities, and a more balanced difficulty level, Summon Night 2 is pretty much the same as the first. You can now save right before battles, which is a bit of a mixed blessing - there's no way (at least that I found) to return to the map screen, so if you want to level up or buy some more items, you're pretty much screwed. This goes for the rest of the Summon Night games, actually. This installment comes on two CDs, so it's a bit longer, and includes a gallery full of unlockable pictures.
